How Can Chronic Hepatitis Be Treated?
Question: I have been diagnosed with chronic hepatitis, grade 2 stage 3 with iron deposition consistent with hemochromatosis following a liver biopsy in 2013. I have undergone phebodomies that has resulted in my feratin levels decreasing. Shouldn't the hepatitis be treated as well? My doctor seems more concerned about me losing weight (6 foot, 2 inches tall, 290 lbs. He wants me to get gastric bipass surgery. Wil losing weight help the situation?
Brief Answer:
Yes weight loss helps
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
For hemochromatosis, reducing the iron overload is the mainstay and it is being done appropriately.
However, obesity also can contribute to hepatitis and hence reduction of weight is required. The bariatric surgery can help in this regard.
Usually for most types of hepatitis there is no specific treatment, we can only reduce the causative factors which in turn improve the hepatitis.
Hope this helps.
