Posted on Fri, 22 Sep 2017
Question: I recently took antibiotics for a staff infection. 10 days later i am experiencing severe GERD symtoms burining throat and paid in my esophagas during and after eating. Rolaids remove the syptoms but i am afraid of damage to my esophagus. I want to take an over the counter H2 blocker but am worried about cardiac side effects. I have a slow heart beat from atenolol for mitral valve prolapse symtoms. What should i take.

Brief Answer:
You can take Ranitidine, it's very safe.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for query my dear.

Ranitidine is an oral drug that blocks the production of acid by acid-producing cells in the stomach. The typical dose is 75 to 150 mg once daily or twice daily, taken 30 to 60 minutes before a meal or beverage that can cause heartburn.

It a very safe drug and short term use is not going to cause any major side effect. One of the safest H2 blocker available is Ranitidine. So don't worry cardiac side effects are something very rare and that too when drug is used for a very long time.

Take it 75mg twice daily for 3 months initially.

Take home suggestion-
I would advise you to take proton pump inhibitors for earlier and better control of symptoms. You can take Omeprazole 40 mg once daily(otc).

Regards.
