How Can Severe Cough In An Elderly Person Be Treated?

default
Posted on Fri, 19 May 2017
Question: I have had a very croupy, gurgling cough, for about a week. No fever. No cold or sore throat. Is this likely to go away or should I have something checked. I am 80 but in really good health.

Brief Answer:
yes, probably...

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

nobody can really say without examining you but acute cough (cough of very recent onset) is usually caused by viral diseases. Such diseases may last for a few days in most cases. The cough may last for more though particularly to patients with chronic disorders like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Being healthy does not exclude you from a protracted course of persistent cough. If more than a couple of weeks go by and the cough is still as bad as it was during the first few days then investigation would be required. Sometimes treatment might be needed.

Most patients will get better before that time. If you notice improvement then this is an encouraging sign to give it some more time. Otherwise visiting your doctor would be a good idea.

I hope it helps!
Kind regards!
