How Can Sore Throat And Hacking Cough After Traveling Be Treated?
Question: We have just returned from a cruise and my wife developed a sore throat and now a deep, non-productive, hacking cough. The cough is worse when lying down and has been going on for 2 full days. No fever. Very tired but able to sleep after hacking subsides.

I am sorry for your wife and i can understand your concern
As you explain the history it seems to me to be a viral infection of the large airways (larynx,trachea and large bronchi).
It is a good thing that she has no fever.
If she were my patient i would recommend her symptmatics or differently said painkillers (like Ibrufen twice orally) for some days.Continue the Robotussin DM too, it may help
She can use aerosols with steroid (like Clenil twice) to improve the sore throat the hacking cough.
For the sore throat i advice her to use spray with iodine antiseptic 3-4 times per day after the meal.
She should take a lot of liquids and to have a rest.
This situation usually last for some days (5-7 days depending on the patient)
I am sure that she will feel better soon
However if her conditions worsens even after this treatment than she should be better to get medical help from he doctor
