How Can Umbilical Hernia Be Diagnosed?

default
Posted on Fri, 4 Jul 2014
Question: I was diagnosed with un umbilical hernia about 4 years ago. I was having severe paid near my belly button that lasted for 3 days, so I wen to the ER. Since then, no pain. How do I find out if I really have a hernia? I've had 3 OB/GYN and 1 internal medicine appointment since then, and none mentioned it. The GYN thought he felt something with an ovary and I had an ultra sound, came back fine.

Brief Answer:
Hi and welcome to HCM

Detailed Answer:
Well, some umbilical hernias cant be diagnosed with ultrasound and only ct scan can be accurate enough for it,but pain caused by hernia is usually sharp and occur after physical activity. it is located more superficialy. It is hard to say is it caused by hernia or something else. if there is associated symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, fever or diarhheas then you need more detailed gastroenterologic work up including colonoscopy or ct scan. But uf there is no pain at this point then you dont need to hurry wuth these tests. Try to wait, eat easier food and see will it improve. WIsh you good health. Regards
