can be very uncomfortable
Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic
Heartburn can vary in severity. It can be mild in some persons and very severe in others.
It does normally feel like a burning sensation in the chest. It can also be associated with additional symptoms in some persons.
Additional symptoms may include some or all of the following : regurgitation of food, acid or bitter taste in the mouth, bloating, nausea and vomiting.
Treatment involves: (1) lifestyle changes
This includes- (a)smaller more frequent meals instead of heavy meals. this causes less acid production
(b)reduced use of acidic/fatty/fried/spicy foods. This also includes reduced citrus fruits, tomato, caffeine, chocolate, mint.
(c)waiting at least 2 hours after eating before laying down
(d)weight loss of any excess weight . Excess weight compresses the diaphragm
(e)elevate the head of the bed if needed
(2)medications- though anti acids may help , the best medications for acid reflux are in the PPI family of meds (the proton pump inhibitors)
This includes meds such as nexium, acidphex, prevacid, prilosec.
You may be able to obtain one of these without a prescription.
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
