How Effective Is Acupuncture In Treatment Of Bells Palsy?

default
Posted on Tue, 22 Sep 2015
Question: I have had Bell,s palsy for 3 months. There has been some improvement but the dropped muscle is still quite obvious, my eye is still red, and sometimes weeping, and reading with that eye is very poor - most of the time! I have recently had a course of acupuncture and although there has been some improvement over that time, I am not too sure it is because of the acupuncture.

Brief Answer:
You should hope for the improvement.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX hall,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.

Though, there is no proven role of acupuncture and I can't comment upon its efficacy. However, approximately 80 percent of the patients with Bell's palsy show almost complete recovery within several months upto one year of the onset of the disease. This recovery is spontaneous and no specific medicines are to be taken for that. However, doing regular physiotherapy/facial exercises is crucial for recovery.

So,I suggest you to be hopeful and wait for the time as Bell's palsy is a disease which mostly recovers.

If you have any further questions,I shall be glad to answer else please close the thread, rate it and write a review as your rating will be of help to me.

Thanks for being in follow-up.

Examples are-

1)Pucker the lips and attempt to whistle.
2)Practise frowning
3)Try to chew food using both sides of your mouth
4)Trying to blow balloon
5)Practise facial expressions in front of a mirror.

However, this is preliminary information and exercises should be learnt from an expert physiotherapist.
