What Is The Remedy For Tailbone Pain ?

39 years old. Low/underweight for height. Tailbone pain for 2 years (no apparent cause). Prominent bone spur (I can feel it myself). Had x-rays, MRIs and cortisone shots (2) - one helped, one didn t. The main problem is pain/pressure when I sit, or even when I lie on my back. I may try acupuncture now or even surgery (to remove spur or section of tailbone). Used to be a LOT of pain on rising from sitting. Now it s not like that, but the pain is always present when I sit. Also, should the tip of my tailbone flex when I press in on it while seated at 90 degrees?

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

The tailbone is not a fixed bone and should be flexible allowing some movement while sitting. This prominent bony spur with less subcutaneous fat is the main problem. Seems you are better now that the pain is absent on getting up. As it is now, only on sitting, use a ring cushion or modified chair with similar built in cushion. A permanent solution to get rid of the problem would be excision of the coccyx. But only after you have tried all the other solution.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. George Verghese, Orthopedic Surgeon
