How Effective Is Immunotherapy In Treatment Of Prostrate Cancer?

default
Posted on Thu, 7 Jul 2016
Question: My father was diagnosed Prostrate Cancer around 2 years ago and underwent treatment using Eligard and Xgeva.

Early this year he got diagnosed with Vallecula Carcinoma and for which he underwent Chemo (Erbitux) 6 seating's and Radiation therapy for 27 days.

While Vallecula seems to have subsided he is now detected with tumor in some of the lymph nodes and for which operation has been recommended by the doctor.

Also as observed in PET scan cancer seems to be spreading to other parts as there are some areas highlighted in lower part of the lungs. Doctor has not given clear guidance around that.

We have been exploring other options to retard spread of his cancer and if possible cure and needed your guidance on therapies that can be considered to extend his healthy life span. He is 73 years old.

Wanted to check around immunotherapy as an option and its effectiveness and its availability in XXXXXXX or XXXXXXX

Thank you for your guidance.

Brief Answer:
Your father has advanced Prostate cancer .

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query ,based on the facts that you have posted it appears that your father is known to have Cancer of Prostate and has undergone radiotherapy and Chemotherapy for the same .

His recent PET scan has revealed thta the cancer has sperad to distant organs (lungs).

In a given situation with advanced cancer and with spread to distant organ it is practically impossible to control he primary disease (Cancer of Prostate ) with any modality .

Aim of the treatment in advanced stage disease is a palliation and to arrest further spread of the disease .

Consult qualified Medical Oncologist for assessment and further treatment .

There is no role for immunotherapy in cancer of prostate .

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions , I shall be happy to help you .
Thanks and Regards.

Thank you for your revert Dr. XXXXXXX

As I mentioned after Prostrate cancer he was diagnosed with Vallecula Carcinoma i.e. throat/neck cancer and for which he underwent targeted chemotherapy using Erbitux, 6 seating's and Radiation for 27 days and problem seem to have subsided.

Within just two months of neck cancer treatment, he has been asked to undergo surgery for tumor in his lymph nodes to get them removed.

As I mentioned regarding spread of cancer to lungs, doctor has not given any clear guidance and not very sure about that.

Wanted to check what all possible options exist for treatment and availability of immunotherapy as an option to address spread of cancer to other body parts.

Thank you for your advice and guidance.
