Dear Sir,
Thank you for posting your query on HCM.
Well looking into your problem I will tell you that HPV infections in genital area are transmitted primarily via sexual activity. That is true it is transmitted by having sex with infected partner . Although other routes like by shared objects or by hands are also there but they virtually dont contribute to the bulk .
The question you are asking cannot be explained that how you got it without sexual activity with somebody else . It can be long standing because it does not lead to much symptoms except for warts in some so can go unnoticed . More important is to get it treated . Get a Pap smear of your wife to look for any changes because HPV can cause cervical cancers and other premalignant lesions .
Take care.

Is it possible that infections like this are transmitted at the doctor's office? at the pool ? or via hand shake ? or at a public bathroom?

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,
Although other routes do exist but there is hardly any evidence in their favour . Routes via transmission with hands touching the genitals does exist . Since this infection is asymptomatic most of the time it is very difficult to say what would have been the route .
