How Is Exercise Induced Asthma Treated ?
You have mentioned that your mother had exercise induced asthma. Since last few weeks, she has developed worsening of her symptoms. She continues to have night time cough and choking and heaving. Inspite of taking medications (Steroids, Inhalers or nebulizers), she is not improving.
During her colonoscopy she might have been anesthetised with certain anesthetics like Midazolam or pain killers like Mepridine which can aggravate breathing problems in people having asthma, obstrustive airway disease.
It is better if you get back to the doctor who has done the colonoscopy and find out the details.
There are few other possibilities also.
1. Refractory Asthma
2. Allergy and Angioedema
3. Obstruction/Irritation of the Bronchus/Airways.
In patients with refractory symptoms we have rule out fastidious infections of the lung.
What she needs a detailed evaluation. If she has not improved even after multiple courses of steroids and after inhalers, then, there must be something else inside the chest.
Clinical examination sometimes might not pick up the lesion..
She should undergo two investigations.
1. HRCT Chest. Its a computed tomography scan of the chest which will help to delineate the lung and its airways in detailed look for any associated pathology.
2. Spirometry - Its a part of pulmonary function tests which helps to know the type and severity of airway disease
It is the repeated coughing which had made her throat raw.
So you must get her evaluated in detail including the imaging studies.
If she were to have only asthma, she should have recovered by now.
Hope this answers your query.
