How Long Can Advodart And Estradiol Be Taken?
Question: Have been taking 2mg of estradiol for 16 years along with 100 mg of spirolactone and advodart for at least ten years. Has kept the prostate psa at .1. If I quit the estradiol after this amount of time will I be at more danger to have prostate problems down the road. My uncle died of it when he was 74. Main side effect I have from the meds is gynecomastia.
Brief Answer:
Better to stop advodart and estradiol
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to HCM and thanks for your query.
I understand your concern.
You have a slightly higher risk of Prostate cancer as a 2nd degree relative had it. But the risk is only 1.7 times the general population.
You should stop the advodart as it increases the risk of prostate cancer.
Estradiol has many side effects including increased risk of clot formation and the unproven benfit you may have outweighs the risk.
I think you should follow your doctor's advice and discontinue estradiol.
Take care

Brief Answer:
May regress a bit.
Detailed Answer:
They may become marginally less. At least they will not grow any further.
Also change your antihypertensive.
You should continue to monitor your free / total PSA which is more important.
Wish you good health and a good day

I have researched a lot of ways to keep from having prostate problems, have always had problems urinating even when I was young, in grade school If I had to wait to long. My father. was the same way and ended up his last few years with a catheter My mothers brother underwent castration about a year before he died of prostate cancer but it was to late. I guess what I am trying to get across is to find someway to eliminate having it in the first place. I am not transgendered but have read they have a lot lower incidence of prostate problems than the general public because of the medications they are on. I have been willing to accept a little feminization for several years for this reason. I guess my question is, if your willing to accept a little feminization in order to avoid a catheter in later life is their something I could take.
Brief Answer:
Most prostate problems are benign
Detailed Answer:
I understand your concern and the trouble you are willing to undergo to avoid prostate cancer.
It is important that you have to be under surveillance. You should do both total PSA and free PSA. The ratio of free PSA should be more than 10% of the total. Also you should have your prostate examined by a doctor (DRE ).
If the ratio is getting low or if DRE is suspecious,
you should have an MRI examination and MR SPECTROSCOPY which will detect the cancer very early and curative treatment can be taken. In most cases cancer of the prostate is slow growing and people tend to die from causes other than cancer more often. It is said people die with prostate cancer rather than of it.
I am not aware of any study in which it was conclusively shown that transvestites have less risk of prostate cancer. If you have a reference, please let me know and I will give you my opinion.
Relax, have a good day
