Suggest Remedy For Constant Migraine

My daughter has had an around-the-clock migraine for 4 weeks. She was hospitalized for 6 days. A spinal tap, blood work, and MRI were done - all of which came back with normal results. She had a negative reaction to DHE, and experienced no positive results from any other treatments (keppra, steroid burst, Torodol, morphine, magnezium, etc.). She was sent home with a headache. In the meantime, we ve had her eyes checked and will have allergy testing done today. We ve been going to a neuromusclar therapy pain clinic regularly and have tried accupuncture (interestingly, the only treatment that has helped even a little). She s missed 3 weeks of school and is becoming angry and depressed. We recently began Prozac for the depression and started Depakote yesterday. I feel like the neurologist has run out of ideas and is trying anything now. I just researched the Depakote and found that it is a migraine preventative and will not make current migraines go away, so I m not sure why he prescribed it. We re trying to get into Mayo Clinic. We have appointments with a child psychiatrist and child psychologist, since anxiety has been a life-long issue for her. Could anxiety possible be causing the headaches?? I know for a fact that the headaches are causing her a lot of anxiety. Do you think the therapy and Prozac may help the migraine go away? Do you have any other suggestions? She needs to be relieved of this ongoing pain and get back to the life a 10-year-old should be living. Thank you for your help!

Hello,

To get rid of migraine the factors that may be causing it should be treated. Any underlying medical condition that may be triggering migraine has to be managed. Obesity, sedentary lifestyle, dehydration, not taking food in time, taking wrong are few factors that trigger migraine. She is advised to do regular exercises and walking twice daily, she should take home made food in time.

Avoid taking processed food, junk food, oily, spicy, fried food, excessive cheese and desserts that are too sweet. She should take high fiber diet and avoid constipation. She can take laxatives for a better bowel movement. She should stay away from addictions if any. Underlying medical condition like fibromyalgia, etc., should be treated. It triggers migraine. She should take 8 hours of quality sleep. Get connected to a Physical therapist to manage stress and anxiety.

CBT, talk therapy, massage therapy will be helpful for her. She should stay away from strong smell (scent, fragrances, odors or smell of paint). She should avoid exposure to direct sunlight, strong glaring lights, prefer to stay in AC room. She should limit the amount of caffeine intake and avoid taking food that cause her symptoms. Psychotherapy is helpful as it helps to get rid of anxiety and stress.

Medical procedures that may be of help are nerve stimulation & TMS but she should be clinically examined by a neurologist who may recommend these procedures if required. Triptans effectively relieve migraine, she may be prescribed antidepressants for relief by the treating neurologist. Treatment for chronic migraine / headache is switching to healthy lifestyle, psychotherapy, physical therapy, stress management along with medicines.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
