How Long Do The Effects Of Mifepristone Last In The System?
Question: How long do the effects of mifepristone last in your system? Have taken mifepristone at 0900 am today morning and am feeling very fatigued with bleeding and cramps. My misoprostal dose is scheduled only 48 hours later.
Brief Answer:
1-3 days
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, there is nothing to worry.
It takes 1-3 days for effects of mifepristone to wane off.
This tiredness and fatigue is all due to withdrawal of pregnancy hormones and will take 2-3 weeks to become normal.
Take misoprstol as per schedule and wait for abortion process to complete in 2-7 days.
Take care.

Thanks doctor. Want to ask however, how much of bleeding is normal after mifepristone and before misoprostal? I am told by my doctor that after taking misoprostal is when severe bleeding and cramps happen. If am already bleeding heavily (about a pad in an hour-hour and a half) would it increase much more after misoprostal? And is there a cause to worry?
Brief Answer:
might not increase more than this
Detailed Answer:
It is common to start bleeding after mifepristone intake which gets heavier after misoprostol intake.
But only about 25-30% patients bleed heavily just after mifepristone as in your case, so abortion process is near completion which is eventually completely cleared after misoprostol intake.
So this is probably the highest bleeding and will eventually not increase after misoprostol.
Just take ample rest and wait for the bleeding to stop.
All the best.

Thanks Doctor.
I have taken misoprostal 48 hours after mifepristone as advised by my doctor. However after the heavy bleeding I had post taking mifepristone, I have not yet had any bleeding after misoprostal today. Is this common? I have taken 2 out of the 3 doses that my doctor gave of misoprostal as yet and the 3rd dose is scheduled for later tonight. I have bad cramps in my lower abdomen but no heavy bleeding as my doctor had said would happen. Does this mean misoprostal has not worked? I had heavy bleeding after mifepristone on Sunday though.

Brief Answer:
wait for a couple of days
Detailed Answer:
It is possible that abortion completed after misoprostol intake and now the pain is just due to the contractions of the uterus to expel the leftover blood clots which will only cause light bleeding.
But at times patients abort only after all the doses of misoprostol are over.
So just wait a couple of days and the process will be most probably over.
Take care.
