How Long Do The Withdrawal Symptoms Of Oxycontin Last?

default
Posted on Mon, 13 Apr 2015
Question: I've been on Oxycontin 30mg tabs 3 times/day since late 2005 after major neck surgeries. In Nov. 2014 decreased dosing to 20mg tabs 2 times/day. On March 3, 2015 decreased to 1 20mg tab once/day.
I've had bad withdrawal symptoms since 3/5. Zolpidem helps a bit. How long do withdrawal symptoms generally last?

Brief Answer:
Acute withdrawal may persist for about a month and mild withdrawal for long

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. Oxycontin is Oxycodone and the drug is an opioid drug. The drug is known to cause dependence so gradual tapering of doses of drug are advised. You have tapered drug doses properly but even after tapering the doses some individuals suffer withdrawal syndrome. Usually they last for about 1-4 weeks in severity and mild withdrawal syndrome (protracted withdrawal) may persist for long even unto 6 months.

You are taking Neurontin and this should help in reducing the anxiety of withdrawal. Discuss with your psychiatrist to increase the doses of the drug if needed. Other drugs like Baclofen can help to reduce the symptoms of withdrawal and you will feel better with reduced craving with this drug. You can discuss with your psychiatrist for that drug.

Thanks, hope this helps you. Please ask again for more doubts.
