How Long Does Paracetamol Take To Show Effect?
Question: I have just commenced amoxicillin and clavulanic acid antibiotic for pustular tonsilitis. I had my third tablet this morning and this is day 4 of regular paracetamol for ongoing fevers (39.5 degrees). The paracetamol does reduce my fever and its associated symptoms. How long does it usually take for the antibiotics to work and is it quite common to have tonsilitis this severe with ongoing fevers, sore throat etc? Would betadine gargle be a good adjunct therapy along with my antibiotics?
Brief Answer:
Monitor up to at least the 6th tablet!
Detailed Answer:
HI and thank you so much for this query.
I am so sorry to hear about this pustular tonsillitis that you have reported. I have reviewed your symptoms as well as the ongoing treatment and find them well adapted for your disease condition. It might take as many as 3days to see a significant change in fevers related to this infection. I will suggest that you wait up to this time and only request further review if fevers fail to subside by the end of the third day on antibiotics. I will not recommend betadine gargles at this time.
I hope this helps. I wish you well. Keep me posted and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
