How Long Does Alcohol Remain In The System For An LFT Test?
Question: Im a pretty heavy drinker and need to do an LFT. Ive been told that drinking even a few days before and LFT can spike your enzymes. How long do I need to abstain from drinking to get an accurate test to see how much damage has been done?
Brief Answer:
can take 2 to 6 weeks for value to return to true baseline
Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic
It is possible that though the GGT is high from persistent alcohol use, it is not as high as 237.
It can take weeks (2 to 6) however for the GGT to go back down to its baseline state.
This means that you should wait at least 6 weeks after using no alcohol to see what your true GGT value may be.
Cigarette smoking has also been shown to affect the GGT so if you use cigarettes, discontinuation would also help you to get a true idea.
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

as a heavy drinker, the last test was probably only a few hours after alcohol leaving my system, could that have caused a spike?
Brief Answer:
yes, this can occur
Detailed Answer:
HI
Sorry about the delayed reply
Yes it is possible that this may have cause the result to be higher than it would normally be but it is important to remember that since you are a heavy drinker, the GGT would not likely be normal.
This means that even after the 2 to 6 weeks time has passed with no alcohol and the GGT and other liver enzymes rechecked , the results may still be above the normal though they may be lower that the above result
