Brief Answer:
A few days with exercises.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. It takes a few days to get over the first attack of BPPV.

2. Visit a specialist who can examine you, confirm BPPV (to avoid missing central problems with similar symptoms) and teach you Brandt-Daroff exercises and the Semont's Maneuver.

3. if there is still no response, an Epley's maneuver may be done. There are also other liberatory maneuvers depending upon the exact semi-circular canal involved.

4. After these exercises, sleep with two pillows or sitting (not an easy task) for a couple of days.

5. Some people experience a 'brain fog'. This goes away after a few days.

6. Medication has a very limited role here. Best avoided.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

thank you for your input. I did see a doc and he said it was BPPV. He also said its my right ear..but if that is the case, is it normal when i try and do the exercises that I get dizzy both from the right and left.

Also its been 3 weeks now, and though i feel better and am not as dizzy, still I am far from normal. Dizzy when i get out of bed in the morning and some while i sleep and also at times in the day.

Is it normal to be taking so long. I have ask a number of people i know and they got over it very quickly..a few days or 1 week.

I am not taking any meds...just trying to do the exercises..

As below:

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. It is a good sign to get dizziness while doing the exercises. As long as the dizziness on the left is not severe as the right, it is fine. For example, many people with BPPV get dizziness when they turn in bed.

2. Most people with BPPV recover in 10-15 days with the exercises and repositioning maneuvers. Untreated BPPV may last for months.

3. The reasons for persistent or residual dizziness include incomplete repositioning of the otoconia, more than one semicircular canal involvement, otolith dysfunction, other coexisting causes of vertigo (example Meniere's Disease), cervical spine spasms, inadequate central (brain) compensation and so on.

4. Use a DizzyFix device to help do the Epley's Maneuver effectively at home. Consider a VNG (VideoNystagmoGraphy).

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
