How Long Does Pharyngitis In Children Take To Recover?

default
Posted on Thu, 14 Apr 2016
Question: I am a preschool director and our current guidelines require a child to be home 24 hours after a diagnosis of strep throat. We are being told by a parent who is also a CNP that medical guidelines have been changed and that a child may return to the preschool setting after 2 doses of amoxicillin--this would happen in 18 hours, not the currently recommended 24. Your advice on this please.

Brief Answer:
I do not suppose that the child needs to be home if he/she has pharyngitis

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Pharyngitis is very common in children and frequently occur either due to Streptococcus (strep throat) or due to viruses like Epstein Barr Virus (infectious mononucleosis). Clinically there is no way to tell these apart and diagnostic testing is usually not recommended. Amoxycillin may precipitate rashes if inadvertently prescribed in a case of mono but in case of strep throat, treatment with amoxycillin is helpful but needs to be given for 10 days. In the meantime, the child may join school.

You might like to go through the following guideline:
