How Long Does Recovery From An ETD Take?
Question: Hi, I am recovering from bad cold I had. It started Last Tuesday and my ears are shut. I have Eustashian tube Dysfunction, my left ear is ok sort of but my right ear cannot open up, even If I try manually opening it with my jaw. How long does ETD last and should I get a nasal steroid spray to reduce inflammation in my nose? Thank you I am going to visit my ENT soon but it will take time for an appointment.
Brief Answer:
a week or so...
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
this condition may last for approximately a week. Sometimes it may last for longer but if your cold gets better, it should improve too. You can only use what you've suggested. A nasal steroid will help with inflammation and swelling in the tube. A decongestant (prefer nasal administration) might also help.
Kind Regards!

Brief Answer:
it may take a few days
Detailed Answer:
The steroid sprays reduce inflammation but you can't expect them to achieve their full effect before some days have passed. In most such cases (after a cold) the dysfunction is self-limited and no treatment is indicated. If it's too persistent or annoying the aforementioned treatment is the only solution.
You can try to help your situation a bit by doing the Valsalva maneuver. Do like if you wanted to breathe some air out without really letting the air out, by applying pressure on your nostrils to block the airways and keeping your mouth closed. This maneuver applies pressure to the eustachian tube and may help to make it patent. Remember to do this gently! Don't try forceful expiration.
