How Long Should Loperamide HCI Be Continued For Diarrhea?
Question: I have had chronic diarrhea for over 10 years that has not been corrected by my mds or with upper and lower gi tests. I go a minimum of 5 times a day and more often 8 or more. Many "accidents" have occurred over the years. On my own, I started taking one anti-diarrhea pill before bedtime and as a result I now have normal bowel movements, usually once a day and am able to "pass gas" like most human beings.
Can taking this pill daily cause any long-term side effects?
Thank you.

Kindly mention the name of the agent that you are taken
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome.
I have gone through your query.
It is not good to take any medication without consulting the doctor, they are external substances with respect to our body and can cause adverse effect.
You have not mentioned the name of the drug that you are taking. Kindly mention it, so that I'll be able to provide you with specific advice. In general I can say taking any medication is not good.
Hope this helps.
Take care

Loperamide HCI 2mg
Brief Answer:
It is safe but inform your consultanting doctor about it
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for providing the information.
Loperamide is supposed to be a very safe drug. There are hardly any side effects, even when it is taken for a long duration, provided the patient does not exceed the daily recommended dosage.
Few side effects include: nausea, vomiting, pain in the abdomen and loss of appetite, toxic megacolon, drowsiness or dizziness, rashes and pruritis, (addiction and dependence is not noted).
But I would suggest you to inform your consultant about it.
This provisional advice provided by me is based entirely on the input provided to me. I would suggest examination by the doctor.
I hope this suggestion might be of some help to you. Please accept my answer in case you do not have further queries.
Take care.
