Question: hello Dr. I went to my doctor for chlamydia and he proscribed me medicine for it. I don't know what the name is I believe it might be azithromycin but what I can say is that he gave me a shot and prescribed me a 1000 miligrams of it. he instructed me to take the pills at once for one time ( x2 500 milligrams) my question is how long will it take for the medicine to take effect and how long untill it goes away. and if it does not go away does this mean that it could be HIV? thank you for taking the time to answer my question.

symptoms: diarrhea (no fever like symptoms)

Detailed Answer:
Welcome to health care magic, I share your concern and I will try to help you out in best possible way.
The doctor might have given you a shot of Doxycycline followed by azithromycin, which are drugs of choice in case of chlamydia infection. Antibiotics will start acting after a two days of consumption of first tablet as they take time to attain optimum level in blood and their mechanism of action is by inhibiting growth of bacteria.
It usually takes a week to 10 days to completely get rid of chlamydia from your system.
No if there are no improvements in health condition after consumption of these tablets,it doesn't mean that you have HIV infection, as HIV doesn't usually cause local lesions in genital area and other STDs like syphilis and gonorrhea do.
I hope this helps you
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.

hello doctor thank you for answering my question. I have another question it's been 11 days since I've taken the medicine and the white/ yellow discharge from my penis has almost gone away but I read the symtoms for the medicine and it says that it can cause diarrhea. which for the first 2 days the medicine did give me diarrhea but it's day 11 now and my stool is soft and not solid.(not fully diarrhea) is it normal for the medicine to affect my stool for this long? thank you.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.
Usually after the course of antibiotics, the normal bacteria present in gut will also be removed, causing improper digestion and absorption of food leading to semi solid stools. Hence I recommend you take probiotics like sporolac twice daily for 3 days, which will be available over the counter or you can take curds along with your food three times a day for 3 days, which will replenish gut bacteria and improve food digestion and absorption.
Its good to hear that all your other symptoms subsided. wishing you good health.

Warm regards
