Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking!
Your doctors are right.Peritoneal dialysis is not advised to be accompanied by gluconates as it may decrease the electrolytes too much like potassium leading to severe reactive hypokalemia ( decreased potassium).
As far as the adverse effects, gluconate or the sulfate has least to do with it. Its the ferrous form of iron which is criminal and notorious for such troubles.
Taking Iron polymaltose complexes are better if the ferrous supplements are non tolerable and i personally prefer iron Polymaltose complexes.
Rest taking the medicine on empty stomach with vitamin C helps the symptoms to reduce.
If the oral adverse effects are non tolerable try some recent advanced parenteral iron therapies like Ferumoxytol they have shown promising effects and work like charm.
Now the how much equivalence is simple. what ever the preparation is available is available over the counter in market is equivalent.
325 mg of ferrous sulphate has elemental iron of 65 mg and 325 mg of ferrous gluconate is 35 mg. so ferrous sulfate is twice the iron than in ferrous gluconate. But its the bioavailability that matters that is the percentage of iron that reaches the body for consumption which is higher for gluconate than sulfate by 20 % on average.
In nutshell, Do as directed by your doctor. You are in safer hands and you have nothing to lose and nothing to worry about.
