Question: hi, can u suggest how much(in mg) iron and calcium suppliments are required in second trimester? 2weeks back, i had 100 mg ferrus sulphate tablet for 1week and i got nausea, vomiting and tooth became black.so i stopped taking that tablet.

A daily supplement containing 16 to 20 mg of elemental iron is recommended during pregnancy. Ferrous fumarate is 33% elemental iron by weight, whereas ferrous sulfate is 20% and ferrous gluconate is 12% elemental iron. You were taking the right dosage of iron . Higher doses can cause nausea and vomiting. The tolerability varies with the preparation. You can use Ferrous fumarate for better tolerability. Teeth become black with liquid preparations. Enteric coated tablets do not have such side effects. You can use Tablets like Ferikind or Fefol-Z capsules.
Calcium supplementation with at least 1 g/day (WHO recommends 1.5–2.0 g/day) during pregnancy reduces the risk of gestational hypertension, pre-eclampsia and preterm birth. It is best to take calcium supplements with milk and iron supplements with water before meals. Do not take these supplements together for best results.
