How To Calm Down An Overactive Child?
Question: My daughter is in the first grade. She is very intelligent and has been in the Gifted and Talented program at school since kindergarten. But this year , she keeps getting in " trouble" with her teacher for talking in class. I have talked and talked to her , had a conference with her GT teacher , classroom teacher , principal and the counselor. I have taken her LeapFrog tablet away from her , now cartoons. I'm concerned. Her teacher said that when she's given a task , she's spot on so her GT teacher gives her extra " challenge" work to do when she finishes her work in regular class. BUT she still gets in trouble for talking. She's a social butterfly and gets along better with older children and adults than ones her own age ..she gets frustrated because the children in her class don't know math like she does , don't color neatly etc. Could she have ADHD or what ?
Brief Answer:
This is not ADHD
Detailed Answer:
Hi...by what you quote I do not feel that this is ADHD. ADHD kids are poor performers, where as your kid is doing more than what is necessary academically. To be more specific - her IQ is above her peers and she's doing everything fast and spare time in class when she has to wait till her peers finish the work might be irritating her.
You say that her social interaction is also good.
If its possible in your country - just try if she can be double promoted to the next class so that her mind will be preoccupied and full of work and to do things - this is the best way I think to expend her energy levels. Other suggestion would be to put her on to regular swimming.
