Is A Positive Blood Group Compatible With O Negative Blood Group?
I am 33 year old guy and my blood group is A positive and have proposal for a partner who is 25 year old and her blood group is O negative.
Before proceeding ahead with this proposal I would like to ensure our blood group compatibility .
Rest all things are clear, only I will be taking the decision based on our blood group compatibility as I have heard that +ve and -ve blood groups are not compatible.I just wanted your scientific opinion on it.This will help me to choose my life partner.

Thanks

Detailed Answer:
Dear Friend.
Welcome to HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney.
I am glad to see the awareness of youth these days.
Let me tell you in detail. See + and -ve is Rh incompatibility. With this you both won't have any problems in your life. But when your partner would conceive , then there can be problem. Suppose the baby becomes Rh -ve, then there won't be any problem. But if baby becomes Rh positive and since mother is Rh negative so the first baby would be born normally. But at the time of delivering mother would get exposed to Rh positive antigens from the baby and her body will start forming antibodies against Rh positive antigen.
Now when she will conceive again, if the baby becomes Rh negative there would not be any problem. But if baby becomes Rh positive, the preformed antibodies inside mother would attack the baby leading to devastating consequences.
However, these days we don't worry for this because with well educated people like you, we advice to give Anti D injection after first delivery which prevents formation of antibodies as I told you.
I hope I am able to explain you well.
Rh incompatibility is not a contraindications to get married. You just have to aware during family planning.
If you have any further query please ask me.
Stay Healthy.
Thanks for the clarification.Being from medical background I had done some research on on this by topic by reading literature and had to get an opinion formed by this research from an expert like you.
I have few questions further on your explanation on the basis of reproduction,
1)From few articles I read,I learnt that in the case where partners are of opposite Rh factors ,as in my typical case where I am A +ve whereas my partner is O -ve,the incompatibility affects the first child itself but as per your explanation, the first child is safe.Do u exactly mean that the first child is safe irrespective of Rh incompatibility? In this case does the antigens formed in the mother's body due to Rh incompatibility affect mothers health, even if the couple doesn't wish a second child?
2)In case of husband and spouse being of opposite Rh factors as in my case, what are the chances of the baby acquiring father's blood group?what is % probability?.How is the baby's blood group determined?.
3)The anti D injections which are given to ovoid isoimmunization process(incompatibility of Rh factors),are they full proof and 100% effective?
Do these injections have any side effect during pregnancy on the baby or the mother or later in their life?
4)In my typical case where I am A +ve whereas my partner is O -ve,is it better compatibility than being A +ve and A -ve or any other +ve and -ve combination??
5)What are the devastating consequences, which u stated, if the baby is A +ve in my case.Is it foetal abortion in the womb or the baby is born with defects or disease in it?is it that baby is diabetic??If so can it be detected in early stage of pregnancy and treated or aborted??
I anticipate point wise clear answers for my above questions.
In anticipation.
Thanks

Detailed Answer:
Dear Friend.
In medical science, we talk about our experiences of life and practice.
It is always advisable that a Rh-ve person should marry a Rh-ve person only.
The complications and precautions are seen when incompatibility is there and marriage has to be done.
Your answers based on my experience are as follows:
1. Theoretically, first baby should be normal. But sensitization does occur in fetal life. So, 100% safety guarantee can't be given.
2. Chances of baby acquiring blood group of father and mother is 50-50. This can't be ascertained.
3. Anti D injections are claimed to be effective. But again, risk is always there. No one is going to give you 100% guarantee.
4. Compatibility issues come with Rh factor only.
5. Baby can have severe jaundice, hemolytic anemia, can die in mother's womb and can even die after delivery.
If you have any further query please ask me.
Few more questions lined up below
1)When can it be ascertained that the baby formed in the womb is affected due to Rh incompatibility?
2)At which month of pregnancy the blood group of foetus can be ascertained(legally)
3)Anti D injections are taken in one shot during pregnancy or it's a course of injections during pregnancy?
4)Any side effects of Anti D injection?
5)As u mentioned "Baby can have severe jaundice, hemolytic anemia, can die in mother's womb and can even die after delivery."...These all happens during pregnancy or just after the baby is born, but any chances of deformities or diseases in the baby's future life span(considering delivery was normal).
6)In case of occurrence of abnormal baby due to Rh incompatibility during pregnancy can it be detected soon and aborted?
7)Any more preventive measures than Anti D injections to avoid this
8)Does this affects mother's health in future?
9)This question may be little overboard but still attempt it ,IF Rh incompatibility such a serious issue then why there is no awareness among people or all doctors and why Government has not taken any measures to educate couple?(premarital counselling)or guidance during family planning?
In anticipation of your crisp but holistic answers

Dear Friend.
Following are the answers:
1. No this can not be easily ascertained.
2. This issue you have to discuss with your Gynecologist. Amniotic fluid sampling can be done but that is an invasive procedure.
3. Depends on the manufacturer. Usually a single shot is given.
4. Not as such, chills, rigors, fever can occur
5. Baby gets affected in womb only, but shows signs and symptoms on delivery.
6. If detected an abortion can be done legally.
7. None
8. If pregnancy and delivery gets uncomplicated, no further issues.
9. This is why we always say that instead of matching "Kundali's" , one should match blood groups.
Government should actually make this a law, that before marriage blood group testing should be done, but since this is a developing countries and most of the marriages are unregistered, nothing can be done as such.
Premarital counseling is available, you can visit a corporate hospital and discuss these issues.
If you don't have a further query, please close the discussion and rate it.
