Question: Is allopurinol a good alternative to uloric. I farm for a living and operate heavy equipment and do a fair amount of driving. Also I do drink often but not more than 2 or 3. The uloric works well but it is awful expensive. thanks XXXXXXX XXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Less potent, but can be used

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

allopurinol is a lot less potent than febuxostat. 40mg of febuxostat have almost the same effect as 300mg of allopurinol. Allopurinol may pose problems to patients with renal, liver or hematologic problems or are allergic to this substance. In most cases it is well tolerated and a good alternative when financial factors come into play.
You haven't mentioned your medical history, so I assume you're healthy. Drinking a couple of drinks every other day is not a very high consumption. Please remember though that alcohol consumption will worsen your uric acid levels.
I hope I've helped!
