Posted on Mon, 19 Jun 2017
Question: My sister's physician has recommended Aripiprazole for her mild dementia. From what I read about the warnings and possible side effects, i am not sure that this is the right drug for her. She is 60, suffers from dementia and has had M.S. for about 25 years. she has take opiods for the M.S. nerve pain for about 20 years, which may account or some of the dementia. What do you think about aripiprazole rx for dementia patients? XXXX

Brief Answer:
Depends on the motive

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Aripiprazole is not used for dementia itself, it doesn't have any impact on the progression of dementia. However at times aripiprazole or other antipsychotics are used in patients who have hallucinations, delusions or who are excessively agitated, which may happen in dementia patients, though usually not in mild stages but later on.

As I said it doesn’t do much for dementia and it is true it has potential for side effects, but in patients with the issues mentioned above it is commonly used even off label when it is impossible to control them. So I agree with its use only if having hallucinations or too agitated, otherwise would be reluctant to use it.

I remain at your disposal for other questions.
