Is Azlithromycin Effective In Preventing Infection For An Abscessed Tooth?

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Jan 2015
Question: Can I take azlithromycin for an abscessed tooth to prevent infection? I had an extensive root canal
yesterday and the endodontist did not prescribe an antibiotic. I am only concerned because I
have, in the past, had pericarditis, without ever knowing the cause. As it is a weekend, I cannot contact
my endodontist.

Brief Answer:
Azithromycin can cause heart rhythm disorder and sudden death

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in details.
Sorry to hear about your tooth abscess. I wish you can try to contact the endodontist or their nurses and discuss your problems with them.

Azithromycin is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria. One should not take azithromycin if they have liver, kidney or heart rhythm disorders.

It is important to inform you that reports of arrhythmias suggest that azithromycin may increase the risk of cardiovascular death. This is a serious health warning and the reason azithromycin should not be taken without a prescription.

Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
