Posted on Mon, 18 Jul 2016
Question: I got a blood test when i was sick last week (i think it was gastroenteritis but no diagnosis) and had a C-reactive protein high sensitive (hsCRP) result of 18.57. Should i be concerned?

i went to doctor because i had really really bad diarrhea, chills joint and back pain and headaches. doing better now except for headaches still lingering

overall just worried when i googled and it said elevated was higher risk for heart disease etc

Brief Answer:
CRP high because of the gastro-intestinal infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for suing HCM to post your question.

I read carefully your query and saw your lab results.

Seem like you have had a Gastro-intestinal infection, which from the lab results may have been bacterial. Maybe you got the infection while you traveled.

The CRP protein gets higher in infections like this. Yes, it has been high, but the fact that you now feel better, and you have taken medical care, means that the infection has been treated.
If you measure the CRP again, most probably it would be within normal limits.
It gets higher in other infection, for example in those that give heart disease, but in your case we know why we found it elevated, so it has nothing to do with heart disease.

Gastrointestinal infection generally heal without complications, so its nothing to worry about. Your headache is probably a result of the dehydration, so my main advise would be to keep drinking fluids, small amounts often, avoid milk, and have a diet with Rice, Bananas, Apple and Yogurt.

Hope this is helpful.
