Is D&C The Right Treatment For Retained Products Of Conception?
Question: I was 10 weeks pregnant and had a missed miscarriage at 8 weeks. I took misoprostol yesterday to start the process. It started to work after 2 hours and after 14 hours of heavy bleeding and passing clots and tissue I was told today that the sac has passed but shows Heterogeneous thickening of the endometrium measuring up to 2.6 cm and is suspicious for retained products of conception and that I should proceed to have a D&C tomorrow. Can't I just wait to see if everything improves with time? Is the D&C a must?
Brief Answer:
No need of D&C urgently
Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Ultrasound to check for the retained products of conception should be done at least14 days after taking misoprostol.
Since you have taken misoprostol yesterday, the abortion process is still in process, and hence the endometrial lining will be thick.
I will suggest you to wait for a week and then repeat the ultrasound.
If still the endometrial lining is more than2.5 cm, then you should go for D&C.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
