Is Diphenhydramine Addictive?

Considerations
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for sending the query.
Benadryl can be somewhat habit forming when used for sleep but one can generally slowly wean the dose over time.
50 mg once daily is not a dangerous dose but if you care interested in stopping the Benadryl Inwould suggest a slow taper.
The taper would involve obtaining 25 mg tablets and first start by taking 1.5 tablets by mouth nightly for total dose of 37.5 mg for 10 days. Then would wean dose to just 25 mg nightly for another 10 days. Then would decrease to 12.5 mg nightly for 10 more days and then stop.
Before doing this, I would suggest you discuss this with your primary care doctor as well.
I would not anticipate significant withdrawal symptoms if you do a slow taper.
Sincerely,
Dr Galamaga

Thank you, I feel a bit better after drinking some water. I will take your advice and call my doctor tomorrow. One last question, is it possible that taking diphenhydramine on a nightly basis could play a role in hair loss or thinning?
