Is Glucosamine Advisable For Joint Pain In The Knee?
Dear doctor,
My mom is 47 years old. 2 years ago, she started to feel some problems of her knees. The symptom is: she can neither climb, run for a long distance or go upstairs (from her recent experience, she felt uncomfortable after went upstairs for 8th floors). If so, she will feel her knees sore. She went to the hospital for almost every kind of testing / scanning but can not find the exact cause of this issue. The doctor says it's probably caused by the lack of lubricating fluid in knees. This explanation matches her situation since she can hear the bone's sound when she tries to stretch straight her leg.
I've heard that the Glucosamine is helpful for people like her case. I want to listen to your advice on the use of Glucosamine. Is it really helpful for her case? If so, do you have any recommendation (since there is a lot of similar products in the market). Thank you!!
mild osteoarthritic changes.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
From your description it seems that both of your mother's knee joints have undergone mild osteoarthritic changes. These are basically age related degenerative changes in the weight bearing joints like knee and is characterized by joint pain and stiffness.
The treatment options include hot fomentation, lubricating agents like glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin , dycerin, etc and some life style modifications and physiotherapy.
Right now she can start taking Tablet Cartigen 1500 mg after breakfast and after dinner. It is suggested to add calcium supplements like Corcium twice daily. This will take care of her mild symptoms.
She can start with walking and aerobic fitness exercises, quadriceps strengthening, patellar tapping, lateral heel wedges, etc- under the guidance of her physiotherapist.
I hope this answers your query.
