Question: Hi,
If I am in PEP, could I trust on the Labtest Like HIVRNA Test for early detection? I've just started taking PEP yesterday and now I want to know when I can take a lab test to have some peace of mind.
Brief Answer:
1-3WEEKS after exposure!
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.
I am so sorry to hear about this exposure. I am happy to know you are taking PEP which should help to significantly reduce your chances of getting an infection. I understand how nervous it gets thinking and discussing about this but facing the problem rather than backing away is the best approach. Congrats on being very proactive on this.
RNA tests are generally effective within 1-3weeks following the exposure to detect whether there is a virus in your system or not. These are very sensitive and specific tests because it looks directly for the viral particles and not an indirect testing through antibodies.
In all, I will suggest you do this 2weeks after potential exposure and get settled on what the outcome is. I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarification if need be. Thanks.

Thank you very much for your answer doctor.
Since I am in PEP I am experiencing nauseas, stomach burning sensation and headache.... I was wondering what could you recommend me (over the counter - since I am in Canada, no access to prescriptions) to help me reduce the side effect so I am able to complete the PEP program?
It is normal than when I get close to my next dose, the headache gets really bad?
Brief Answer:
Try omeprazole!!
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for following up with me.
The stomach burning sensation may be related to pill induced gastritis. Taking these drugs with enough water and meals can help reduce this. Also, omeprazole will help relief these symptoms.
These terrible headaches when you are close to the next dose is not related to the drug intake. This is more suggestive of how worried you are about the possible infection risk and the rather very intense thinking and fears you have just before taking this medication. Free your mind and know that no amount of thinking can affect the outcome but taking the medications would.
I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to request for more information if need be. Thanks.
