Is HIV Test Done 45 Days After Exposure Conclusive?

default
Posted on Mon, 20 Apr 2015
Question: Hi Doctor,

I have done unprotected sex on 16th Feb, 2015.

And after 14 days I have done HIV 1 RNA Qualitative test (sample type EDTA Plasma Blood) and HIV 2 real time PCR (sample type EDTA Plasma Blood). Both the results are negative.

After 28 days of exposure I did an HIV 1 and 2 + p.24 Ag (method CMIA) which was also negative.

And after 45 days of exposure I again did an HIV 1 and 2 + p.24 Ag (method CMIA) which was also negative.

I have attached all the reports.

Doctor, would you please confirm whether my results and 100% accurate or I need to do any further tests. Can I have sex with my wife. I am getting married.

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Please get tested one last time for HIV 1 and 2 antibodies at months

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. From the above results, it is conclusive that you do not have a possible infection with HIV 1 virus. HIV 1 infection would cause presence of HIV 1 antibodies and p24 after 45 days and both of them are not present in you. Therefore there is no possibility of HIV 1.

2. Rare possibility of HIV 2 might be present but this probability is less and should not be a serious concern. HIV 2 causes just 2 percent of HIV infections and this is mostly seen in XXXXXXX and Asian regions. The p24 does not look for HIV 2 virus particle and to be sure that you do not have any infection by HIV (which is rare in itself) please get a HIV antibodies test done at the end of 3 months. This will confirm with certainty that you are not infected with HIV 1 and 2 virus.

3. Please practice safe sex with unknown partners and till you get your 3 months test for HIV antibodies done, you can have protected sex with your partner. Once the 3 months tests are negative you can be completely relaxed and proceed to enjoy your married life.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
