Is HbA1C Level Of 5.0 Suggestive Of Gestational Diabetes?

My wife got conceived in XXXXXXX 2016. and later she had a miscarriage and did D&C in 23rd august. In december she got slight diabetes and now she is taking metformin 500 mg twice daily. Now her sugar levels are in control her HbA1C is 5.0 now and also she reduced her weight from 70kgs to 57 kgs now. My doubt is whether this is gestational diabetes, her diabetes will go off or is it permanant.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX.
I have read your message.
I think I can suggest a solution.
You see this may be gestational diabetes.
Nowith gestational diabetes may improve after pregnancy ends or may continue or may even recur later in life.
This cannot be predicted.
Now HbA1c is pretty low in your wife''s case.
Ideally , I will suggest testing fasting and PP sugars and gradually reducing the dose of metformin.
Once the medicine stops, a 6 monthly evaluation is needed in non pregnant state to detect diabetes as soon as possible. And in pregnant state, the sugars may recur.
I have tried my best to give you the required information.
Feel free to contact me for any related information.
Best of luck, Dr Mittal.

My wife's parents does not have history of diabetes. as my wife have developed diabetes now and it is in control now and now we are trying to get pregnant now, will baby get affected in anyway as my wife have diabetes.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX.
Diabetes needs to be controlled in pregnancy, it can have affects on the child.
As for gestational diabetes, it's not always related to genes.
Having said that, I would like the tests before we label your wife diabetic, with HbA1c of 5. Gestational diabetes , yes. But not necessarily diabetic.
Best of luck, Dr Mittal
