Brief Answer:
It is routine to prescribe some antibiotic

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for posting your query in Healthcaremagic.com.
This is Dr. Swarnava Dattagupta answering your query.

I understand your concern.
Any surgical procedure should have an antibiotic coverage.
You have not mentioned which dental procedure. Anyways, antibiotics are generally prescribed for a few days for dental procedures too to combat infections.
And dont worry, it wont interfere with your partial knee replacement.
So it might not be absolutely necessary, but it is indicated for protection from infections and is prescribed routinely everywhere.
kEFLEX is cephalexin, a cefalosporin and you should take the antibiotic course.

Hope I have answered your question.
If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
Regards.

I am sorry. I guess I didn't make it quite clear. I have a partial knee replacement and the orthopedic surgeon said I must take the antibiotic even when I go to the dentist for teeth cleaning. I'm not concerned about the dental procedure, just my knee. Thank you!

Brief Answer:
No it is not necessary

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thank you for the detailed history.

Previously you have mentioned you had knee replacement several years ago.
If such is the case and the last few years have been uneventful, you need not take antibiotics separately.
Your dentist will prescribe you antibiotics routinely so an additional antibiotic wont be required. If he/she does not, then only you should take antibiotics as per your orthopedician's suggestion.
Dont worry, your knee will be fine.

Regards.
