Is Meropenem An Effective Medication For UTI?

Question: OK. My sister is a patient with Myasthenia Gravis, generated by multiple antibiotic, carcinogenic, as well as neurological medications, not to mention the multiple visits to the O.R. because of breast reconstruction. I am a clinical laboratory scientist, of 46 years in practice. I have been telling her that the antibiotics recommended are on the "black box" list. She has had a multitude of UTIs, with no resolution. (I suspect her infections have NEVER been resolved.) Her last visit to the urologist was today. The urologist recommended MEROPENEM for her last UTI, which was never resolved....ever, since the infection was discovered some 7.5 years ago. (>100,000 CFU/mL of E. Coli) I do not live in this vicinity. I live in the Reno/Sparks region of the USA. CAN she take this med, or will it also result in mere slightly resolving the infection?

If she can do the Fosformycin (P/o) instead of the Meropenem (IV) that would be wonderful. I believe the ureters are being grossly damaged by this lengthy infection. What say you?

Brief Answer:
Meropenem is the best choice for her

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking in HCM

I have gone through your concern and i can understand you

I am sorry for your sister"s situation

According to the history you provide she is allergic to some important classes of antibiotics that might help her a lot.

Given the fact that she has E.coli and sp Meropenem i/v is the best choice for her.She can take it safely for 10 up to two weeks.

She should drink a lot of water too all the time in order that the urinary bladder be recovered by the debris

I do not think fosfomycini can help her UTIs

She should repeat the uroculture after three-four weeks after the treatment

I wish a fast recovery for her

Take care and feel free to ask me again
