Is Olmark And Crestor Safe For BP Treatment?

Posted on Thu, 10 Apr 2014
Question: I had a BP of 154/100 on my first visit to my doctor on August 8, 2013. On August 22, 2013 the doctor recorded a BP of 152/100 and then 142/96 on August 27, 2013. He prescribed Olmark-20 once a day, which I am continuing to have. As I write this, I have checked my BP and the machine (Omron HEM-7203) shows 130/74. I was simultaneously prescribed Crestor-10 as my cholesterol levels Total/Triglycerides/HDL/LDL/VLDL were 258/126/66/166.8/25.2 respectively. I had another test done on Feb 12, 2014 and these levels were reported at 159/95/60/68/19. I am 5'11", 64 years, and slim body-weight 84Kg I am worried about the possible side effects from taking these drugs over protracted periods and seek your advice. Thank you PS: I have a State Bank of India Debit Card but am unable to use it to pay because the space provided does not accept all the digits

Brief Answer: These are generally safe medicines. Detailed Answer: Hello XXXX Thanks for writing to HCM Your doctor has prescribed the right medicines. You should continue these medicines. Your blood pressure and lipid profile are normal now. Olmark-20 is a safe drug but it is contraindicated in patients with renal artery stenosis(unilateral or bilateral). However it may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, electrolyte abnormalities etc. Crestor-10 may cause unexplained muscle pain and weakness. When this develops you should stop the medication immediately and consult your doctor. You also need few other investigations like routine hemogram,Random blood sugar(RBS),Liver function test(LFT),Renal function test(RFT),ECG in all leads,Ultrasound of abdomen. Besides medicines you also need life style modification and diet changes. You should avoid red meat, high fat milk products. Cook food in olive or canola oil. You should take limited salt in your diet.Avoid fried and junk food.Avoid alcohol & smoking if you take these things. Take lot of fruits and vegetables. You should also increase your physical activity in the form of walking and exercise. You can also do meditation and yoga.It will help you a lot. Don't take stress in life. Get well soon. Hope I have answered your question. Further queries are most welcome. Take Care Dr.Indu XXXXXXX
