Is PSA Levels Of 9 Ng/mL In An Elderly Person Normal?

Question: I am a 73 year old man. Average PSA 6.0 I had a PSA of 9, I went on antibotics and it went down to 5.2. Next test was 6.8. I would like to do Ciproflaxen and have another blood test to see where I am at. If it is back to 6 I am OK. If it is higher, I would rather have an MRI before a Biopsy.

Brief Answer:
repeat PSA levels above 4, warrant a biopsy.
Detailed Answer:
Hello Herb and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist,i fully understand and share your concern.
Normal upper limit of PSA is 4.
Any level above that is abnormal.
If you've repeatedly got levels of PSA above 4, it's safest to have a prostatic biopsy.
Then you're sure of the diagnosis, and proceed accordingly.
If the biopsy show's malignancy, then, MRI scan of pelvis, and a bone scan are advised.
Hope your doubts are cleared.

Follow up request on question-
Knowing that biopsys are guesstimates where a cancer could be.
I am leaning toward a MRI first to isolate where & if there may be a cancer.
Also what about using ciproflaxen before a next blood test?

Brief Answer:
Biopsy alone can confirm a cancer.
Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
You've got a misconception on diagnosis of cancer.
Only one test can diagnose a cancer, and that's a biopsy.
Bone scan and MRI scan are done thereafter, to know if the cancer has any spread into the bones or into adjacent organs.
Ciprofloxacin will not alter the diagnosis, or change the course of diagnosis.
Also remember, a high PSA, doesn't mean, you've a prostate cancer.
It only suggests, that you may harbor a prostate cancer.
Hence,if repeat PSA's are high,we always advise a biopsy,to be sure, we're not missing a cancer.
Hope your doubts are cleared.
You're welcome to clear all your doubts and not delay your biopsy.
Wish you good health.
