Posted on Mon, 14 Nov 2016
Question: Hi back. I've suffred from acute anxiety for three years. Right now an on .5 adavan and 1.1 adaven with 4 nurontons and several serequel twice a day and this combination calms me down. Hoever, the only doctor I can work with will not subscribe any more adavan. and have not been able to find a psychiatrist anywhere within 30 miles. this research has been done by my medicare HMO, Freedom. What would you recommend as a safer drug to replace the adavan? I've been looking a Paxel. Do you have any suggestions? thank you, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Consultation

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

Ativan is highly dangerous in those older than 65 due to risk of memory loss, delirium, falls, fractures, and confusion. It is a good decision to change to a different medication. Paxil is an SSRI antidepressant that is also used for treatment of anxiety. This is a safe medicine and it is very effective. I would certainly encourage you to talk with your doctor about prescribing Paxil.
