Is Regestrone Effective In Treating Irregular Periods?

default
Posted on Wed, 31 Dec 2014
Question: Hi, i had my last period on 8/11/14 by regestreone. I have been taking folic acid every day since then. I have usual irregular periods. Does regestreone/folic acid influence my pregnancy in any way. When is the earliest blood/urine hcg tests confirm? I have my tsh level of 5.

Brief Answer:
HCG levels can be detected in blood a week before you even miss the periods

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic. Regestrone contains Norethisterone which is similar to oestrogen and acts as a contraceptive which when withdrawn, gives you periods. So, this can be used to give you periods on regular basis. You are unlikely to get pregnant when on Regestrone on regular basis. Folic acid will not help you become pregnant but would help in reducing the chances of neural tube defects in the foetus, if you become pregnant which is unlikely when you are on Regestrone.

After you stop taking Regestrone, you need to try for pregnancy.

The HCG is produced by the placenta and enters the blood stream as soon as implantation occurs, about one week after fertilization and ovulation, as the embryo implants and the placenta attaches to the uterine lining. It level usually rises as pregnancy progresses, and doubles every 48-72 hours until 11-12 weeks of the pregnancy. Blood levels are detectable earlier than urine levels. With sophisticated tests, it can be detected as early as 2-3 days after implantation or 8-9 days after fertilization which is a week before you even miss the periods.

You need to keep the TSH levels below 2.5 for a safe level during pregnancy. So, consult your doctor and get medicines accordingly.

Thank you doctor. I am already on irregular period. So don't know when will be my next period. Last period was on 8/11/2014. When will I be able to test hcg? I stopped regestreone by 5/11/2014 itself after 2 dosage. Does it affect my pregnancy still? What should be the hcg level when tested to prove pregnancy. Till what date should I wait for the tests to come true if I am pregnant. If the test is negative and if period is missed, should I take registreone or should wait until it comes normal? Before the next period, can we try for pregnancy???

Brief Answer:
Treatment of underlying cause essential

Detailed Answer:
Thanks XXXXX for writing back.

I understand your concerns but there are a couple of things that you need to understand first. The cycles with ovulation are fairly regular. So chances are that your cycles are anovulatory. Unless you ovulate, you cannot become pregnant without which testing for HCG is meaningless.

The cause of irregular periods needs to be assessed first. Your high TSH indicates hypothyroidism which is indeed a possible cause. Taking some simple medicine will bring the situation in control. Please get in touch with your gynecologist and remain in regular follow up.

The next possibility is a condition called polycystic ovary for which regesterone has been prescribed. A lower abdominal ultrasound will confirm the situation. It is only after treatment of the underlying cause, you can become pregnant. You have to continue regesterone till then. You have not done the right thing in stopping it. Try for pregnancy only after that.
