Is TSH Level Of 4.73 A Cause For Concern?
Question: My wife is 8 weeks pregnant now. We got all tests done as suggested by doctor. I came to know she is having Thyroid problem. Result is 4.73.
Doctor suggested to use Thyronorm 25 mcg once daily before break fast.
Is Thyroid problem normal during pregnancy? Is it harmful to baby?
Is 4.73 mean high number of hormones are less?
Are there any side affects of using thyronorm ?
Should I change my diet?

Brief Answer:
hypothyroidism in pregnancy.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to HCM,
The TSH levels during early pregnancy should be maintained between 3.2-3.8, to allow the pregnancy to be safe and allow good placentation else there is an increased chance of treated miscarriage and also long term effect is seen in child's IQ level. So thyroxine supplementation has been rightly done with 25mcg daily and to be continued through out pregnancy till delivery . Thyroxine is safe in pregnancy and has no adverse effect on the child.

Hi XXXXXXX
Thank you for the response.
4.7 score means Hormones are not produced as required for mother/baby?
Can this problem be corrected with medication during pregnancy? Will this affect Baby after birth?
Is this problem common during Pregnancy?
Should we follow any diet plan?

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Ideally the normal Tsh levels should be less than 5 in non pregnant women but as per acog guidelines as I mentioned target in pregnancy remains 3.2 to 3.8.
Thyroxine cannot be supplemented through diet but through tabs only.
This tab is safe in pregnancy and should be taken till term.
you may start with 25mcg and repeat tsh after 2 months. This is common in pregnancy and cases are rising due ti increased levels of atress in daily life.
regards.
