Is Valtrex Effective In Reducing Transmission Of Genital Herpes ?
Question: Has Valtrex or acyclovir antiviral suppressive therapy been shown to decrease transmission of genital herpes in discordant couples?
Brief Answer:
Yes it has
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
both have shown efficacy in reducing the risk for transmission. Please keep in mind that transmission is still possible but the risk is lower. There is no measure that can guarantee 100% safe sex, even the condoms!
Valacyclovir is considered a better choice than acyclovir, although acyclovir is a reasonable alternative.
I hope I've helped!
If you have further questions, please ask. I'll be glad to help.
Kind Regards!

Do you know what %decrease in transmission or %chance for transmission with valcyclovir? Also can you give me the journal(s) source for the research?

Please read the answer
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
you can search for "Once-Daily Valacyclovir to Reduce the Risk of Transmission of Genital Herpes" on New England Journal of Medicine (www.nejm.org). This article appeared on 1994 and is free to read. You can find all the details in there.
Treatment almost halved the transmission rates. The viral shedding time was reduced 4-5 times and the herpes recurrence on the infected individual was lowered almost 4 times.
The above involved a 500mg daily dose which is lower than the usual therapeutic dose.
I hope I've been clear in my presentation of the facts.
If I've left you with questions though, please ask me for clarifications.
Kind Regards!
