Posted on Thu, 2 Mar 2017
Question: I was advised by a first aid technician to take 650 mg aspirin each four hours for a suspected blood clot in my
lower leg until I am able to travel to a hospital for proper diagnosis. Is it safe to take such a high dosage of aspirin ?

Brief Answer:
Aspirin has no role in treatment

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX, aspirin has no role in treating blood clots. a blood clot in your leg is a serious condition . you need to go to the hospital as soon as possible. delay in treatment may cause a part of the blood clot to detach and travel in the blood stream to get stuck in another place causing another blood clot in another place in the body. the most serious place is the lung leading to a pulmonary embolism that could be fatal. also delay treatment may cause gangrene of tissues due to lack of blood supply.
treatment of blood clots include:
1) raising your leg
2) compression stockings
3) anticoagulants as heparin and warfarin which need to be taken under the supervision of a doctor . I hope I answered your question
