Is A Glucose Reading Of 109 A Cause For Concern?
Question: My blood sugar has always been normal. Neither parent had diabetes, nor do my sisters. In March a routine blood test ordered by my oncologist showed my blood sugar to be 109, then in May it was 75, now today it was 101 when I went for a PET scan. Am I on the road to diabetes?
Brief Answer:
All your glucose readings are normal. You're not on the road to diabetes.
Detailed Answer:
Hello Ms XXXXXXX
Thank you for posting your concern here.
Your glucose levels are perfectly normal, not even a single reading from the different times is even slightly above normal.
Do not worry. You are not on the road to diabetes.
I hope this would suffice for now, please do write back to me if you have additional concerns.
Best regards.

Thank you for your replay, Dr. XXXXXXX D. The reason I questioned my results is because the lab report cuts normal glucose level off at 100 and flagged my result as high. I don't know what number is high enough to be considered pre-diabetic and so I got worried. It's good to know I'm still in normal range.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.
Brief Answer:
Even for fasting blood sugar levels, a cut of 100 is too low.

Hello Ms XXXXXXX
Thank you for getting in touch with me again.
A value of up to 140 mg/dl when checked randomly or after a meal is considered quite normal .
For fasting, a value of less than 110 mg/dl is considered normal.
You are not diabetic, some labs keep a lower cut off value, but the world diabetic associations have not reduced the fasting sugar levels to 100, so relax, you are not diabetic.
I hope this clarifies things further.
Best wishes.
