Is A Weight Of Around 10 Kg Ideal For A 1 Year Old Child?

Question: Hi, my girl child is 1 year old. According to our paeditrician her growth is normal- weight is around 10kg. Now she is on solids. She gets 4 meals a day- 2 cerelac and 2 comprised of rice, lentils, carrots and vegetables etc. She is receiving adequate breastfeeding. Her stool passing is very irregular and constipates quite often. On the advice of our local doctor we give her milk of magnesium and gripe water when needed. Still if it doesn't occur then we give anal suppository. She doesn't have any acidity issues. 1. Do we need to change the food habit? 2. What can be the reason for her irregular stool passing and constipation? 3. Can there be side effects of all these medicines she is getting? 4. Is it okay to use doose and other medicines for SOS? Kindly help.

Brief Answer:
Some changes in food habits needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX
Welcome to the HCM

I understand your concerns but don't worry. It's very normal for an infant to have irregularities in colour, consistency and frequency of poops. As your child is growing well as suggested by her weight and your pediatrician's review, do not worry about such irregularities.

I would recommend you the following solutions to your questions:
1. Constipation is aggravated by dehydration, lack of fibres and osmotic substances in diet. So, increase her fluid intake, add more fibre rich diet and fruit juices along with raisin to her diet.
2. In case she doesn't improve, then syrup lactulose can be given as and when required. It's safer and better than milk of magnesia.
3. Avoid medications for mild constipation which is not bothering her. There is no proven role of gripe water in constipation so avoid it.

Hopefully this will help you. I would be glad to help you in any further questions.

Take care

Hi, I couldn't find syrup lactuloose. They have duphalac which have lactuloose solution, but children not written. Can you suggest some brand names and will it be written for children in those medicines? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
You may use duphalac, Riliz or Looz

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
You may use any of the brands like Duphalac, Riliz, Looz etc. All have lactulose in them. They are same for children and adults. Only the doses vary. For one year old, I usually recommend 2.5 ml thrice daily. The dose may be gradually increased to 5 ml if the constipation is severe.
Hopefully this will help you.
Take care
