Posted on Mon, 2 May 2016
Question: Hello Doctor!! Its been 7 months and 2 weeks since i had an intercourse with an woman whose HIV status i am not aware of. In the middle of the activity my condom broke by the time i realized i ejaculated in her vagina. The total activity lasted less than 2 mins. After this incident i started to worry about an possible exposure to HIV. After 4 months of this incident i did an HIV Tridot Rapidtest at an local clinic and the result came back Non-Reactive. I was re leaved at that time but still i used to have a doubt and fear. So after 4 months i took an HIV test every 2 weeks and all came back Non-Reactive. I took 4 Tridot Rapid Tests, 2 ECLIA HIV test and recently the last one was Enhanced Chemiluminescence HIV test. At the end of Seven Months and two weeks all the results were Non-Reactive. In the past 2 months i have experienced with flu like symptoms like cold and sore throat and boils in arm pit and occasional body pains. I want to know if i might be still at risk of getting HIV and any further other tests are required. I am attaching the last three HIV test results which were done with one month interval. Please do advise me on this i am having an hard time in concentrating on other things because of this fear. Thank You

Brief Answer:
No risk for HIV at all.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

Welcome to HCM. I have gone through your query and understand the concerns you are worried for.

You had protected sexual intercourse with women of unknown status. The total act lasted less than 2 mins and the condom broke during the middle then the chances of getting HIV from such short period exposure are very less so nothing to worry much.

You had tested 7 times for HIV after 4 months of exposure and all were non-reactive then there is no possibility of getting the infection and you are free from HIV absolutely because the window period for HIV also varies from 15 days to 3 months.

No further test is required because the test result after 3 months is considered 100% conclusive and reliable so don't get over anxious or tensed. Forget about the past and move ahead in life happily.

Your symptoms are mostly due to other common viral infection or seasonal change nothing else for which consult your local physician, take advice and follow the treatment regime to be healthy.

As your friend I will also suggest for monogamous relationship and stay away from such kind of high risk activities to prevent the future risk of HIV and other STDs. For any further query you can get back to me any time. Wishing you Hapoy and healthy life

Thank You

Thank You for the Reply Doctor!! It really helped me.
I want to know one more thing .
Regarding the testing part i read like ELISA test is the best one for HIV detection..
But i have taken rapid tests,ECLIA and Enhanced Chemiluminescence Tests.
What is the credibility of these tests, does this mean these are less relaible...
Should i have to taken an ELISA test before it self...

Brief Answer:
No need to go for ELISA.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

Welcome back and thanks for follow-up.

The rapid tests, ECLIA and ELISA all are 3rd generation tests which detect antibody to HIV virus. All these tests are equally good and reliable with similar accuracy so no need to take an ELISA test as you are absolutely free from risk. Hope this info will help you, if still any query left you can get back to me any time.

Thank You
