Is Angiography The Best Treatment For Heart Problems In A Diabetic Person?
Question: My father in law is 61. he is heavy diabetic . cardiac doctor took his ECG and tropolin tests. ECG was normal. tropolin was 0.01. should we go for angiography? what are the chances of having blocks. He finds difficulty in doing exercise cycle. he has a history of mild attack in 1998.
Brief Answer:
It is desirable to undergo angiography
Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,
Actually patients with diabetes mellitus have elevated risks for having cardiovascular diseases. Sometimes they can have blockage in their coronary arteries (Heart vessels) but have no symptoms.
It is good he has normal ECG, but it doesn't exclude coronary artery disease (blockage in his arteries).
So I would advise your father to undergo angiography to evaluate heart arteries
Hope I could help you
Wishing a good health to your father
In case of further questions don't hesitate to ask

what are the symptoms of having blockages...I found in Google that troponin levels of 0.01 is a clear indication of no blockage. can you comment
Brief Answer:
Welcome back
Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,
If your doctor has sent his for troponin test it means he/she suspected heart attack. Negative or low troponin result means there is no heart attack but it doesn't rule out heart artery blockage (coronary artery disease). In this case we calculate risks, and if a patient has high risk he/she is more likely to have cardiovascular disease, so the patients with high risk are referred to angiography to evaluate the vessels.
Previous heart attack and diabetes mellitus are risk factors for blockage That was the logic I have advised your father to undergo angiography.
But for more accurate risk evaluation I need to know
1. the reason your father referred to doctor, whether he had chest pain and whether he has chest pain or dyspnoe on physical exertion
2. if your father has high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels
3. other comorbidities
4. the weight and height of your father
5. the medication he takes
6. which troponin test was done (troponinT, troponinI, high sensitivity troponinT)
Regards,
Welcome back
