Is Bipolar Mood Disorder And Personality Disorder, the Same?

Posted on Thu, 5 Jun 2014
Question: Hi Doctor. I have a 38 year old son who has had bipolar disorder for 15 years. Recently a new psychiatrist added "Personality Disorder" to his diagnosis. Are the 2 conditions related in any way. My son gets so agitated and dangerously angry at the smallest things. We are afraid of him when he gets into these rages. Some doctors don't seem to believe in this diagnosis. What do you think and what can be done about this serious social disorder. It is ruining his hopes for a normal future. The meds he takes for his bipolar are apparently what is used for Personality Disorder. He takes Seraquel and Epival. He ha also taken Clonazepam in the past for anxiety. Please help. Thanks, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Two different illnesses

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for choosing health care magic for posting your query.
I have gone through your question in detail and I can understand what you are going through.
Bipolar mood disorder and personality disorder are two different illnesses. However presence of personality disorder is a bad prognostic factor for bipolar mood disorder. In-fact personality disorder doesn't have any specific medical treatment and the treatment is sought by using psychotherapy means.
His bipolar mood disorder has not settled down yet and it appears that he is in a manic phase. His mood stabilizer dose has to be maximized and if necessary an add on mood stabilizer has to be added. Other options are oxcarbamazepine or carbamazepine or lamotrigin etc. He needs to see a psychiatrist and you may discuss these options with his psychiatrist. If the symptoms are worse then even an indoor care may be planned.
Hope I am able to answer your concerns.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
